Short Description: Attendees will be delighted to hear two of the hottest topics in dentistry, occlusion and esthetic. Dr. Marc Gainor will discuss a scientifically based practical approach to managing occlusion in everyday practice. Attendees will learn the various principles of occlusal evaluation and treatment and gain confidence in treating simple and complex occlusal problems. Dr. Arthur Volker will discuss how easy it is to talk about taking away less tooth structure, but it is more difficult to apply this concept to achieve predictable esthetic and functional results.

Speaker: Dr. Marc Gainor

Dr. Marc Gainor has been in the private practice of dentistry for 33 years. He graduated with a BA in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977 and received his DMD degree from the University Of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1981. He then completed a post graduate General Practice Residency in Dentistry in 1982. Dr. Gainor has completed the Pankey Institute restorative continuum, the Spear Institute mastery continuum and has taken advanced coursework at the Dawson Academy, and the Strupp Postgraduate School of Dentistry. Dr. Gainor has taught courses locally and nationally on the subjects of Occlusion, TMD, Treatment Planning and Restorative Design. He is currently Visiting Faculty at the Spear Institute in Scottsdale Arizona, and has held appointments as Clinical Instructor at both the University of Pennsylvania and New York University. Dr. Gainor is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Equilibration Society, the New York Academy of Dentistry, the New England Masters Study Club, the Occlusal Concepts Study Club, and the Rockefeller Center Study Group. Dr. Gainor is also an honorary Fellow of the American College of Dentists and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
 

Course Description - Morning Lecture - “Occlusion Simplified for Everyday Practice”

This course will provide a scientifically based practical approach to managing occlusion in everyday practice.  Attendees will learn the various principles of occlusal evaluation and treatment and gain confidence in treating simple and complex occlusal problems.

Learning Objectives:

? Learn the important components of a complete occlusal evaluation

?Understand why an occlusal analysis is important for any patient requiring comprehensive or quadrant dentistry

?Understand the components of a complete joint and muscle exam and learn what positive findings mean

?Learn how to evaluate teeth for patterns of erosion and attrition and how those patterns affect prognosis and treatment planning

?Understand techniques to improve the accuracy of impressions and model mounting

?Learn how to use the leaf gauge and Lucia jig to safely load test the TMJ, deprogram muscles and take bite records

?Be able to utilize knowledge of TMJ sounds, movements and functional loading to help choose appropriate bite appliance therapy

?Learn how to take Centric Relation and protrusive bite records with efficiency and consistency

?Know how to make sense of occlusal appliances: when and which to choose

?Understand when, why and how to perform an occlusal equilibration, including how to discuss it with your patients

Speaker: Dr. Arthur Volker

Dr. Volker graduated from the Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery. He is the Chairman of the New Dentist Committee and a member of the Continuing Education Committee for the New York State Academy of General Dentistry. He served as a clinical attending at the Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital and Nursing Facility on Roosevelt Island, and is in private practice in New York, with an emphasis on cosmetic and minimally invasive dentistry. Dr. Volker has published articles and lectures on such topics as cosmetic dentistry, minimally invasive dentistry, dental materials and dental implants. Dr. Volker is a Key Opinion Leader for several dental manufacturers, and has been involved in the testing and development of dental products and materials. He has also served as a consultant to dental laboratories.  Dr. Volker holds diplomate status with the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry as well as Fellowships in the American College of Dentists and the Academy of General Dentistry.

Introduction

Minimally-invasive dentistry” is a hot topic in dentistry.  It’s very easy to talk about taking away less tooth structure, but it is more difficult to apply this concept to achieve predictable esthetic and functional results.  This course aims to give clinicians the tools needed to successfully and immediately expand the use of minimally-invasive dentistry in daily practice.

Course Objectives:

Understand and apply principles of smile design and analysis of proportions

Gain familiarity with several minimally-invasive direct and indirect restorative treatments, techniques and materials

Discuss caries detection and prevention strategies

Discuss non-rotary marginal refinement techniques for indirect restorations

Gain familiarity with orthodontic options, including treatment for periodontally compromised patients

Understand how to apply the protocol of combining orthodontics and restorative modalities for esthetic improvement while minimizing tooth reduction

Course includes continential breakfast and lunch

The New York State constituent of the Academy of General Dentistry is an approved program provider.  The sponsor’s formal CDE programs are acceptable by the AGD for Fellowship and Mastership and membership maintenance credit.  This course is also acceptable for MCE Licensing Maintenance.  The current term of approval extends from 01/01/15 to 12/31/18.  AGD Code #219318.
