Although precautions to prevent such emergencies are undertaken, they are inevitable and the dental practitioner and their staff have an ethical and medico-legal obligation to recognize promptly and appropriately respond to these emergencies.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Gangwani is an Assistant Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry/Eastman Institute of Oral Health. She earned her Dental Degree from New York University College of Dentistry where she was inducted in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) dental honor society, and received her Advanced Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center. Dr. Gangwani is board certified and practices full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Her expertise include performing wisdom teeth extraction, bone grafting procedures, dental implant reconstruction, corrective jaw surgery and reconstructive surgery after facial trauma. She also specializes in management of TMJ disorders and benign pathology. Dr. Gangwani spends a great deal of time educating her patients and providing treatment options, thus helping them make informed decisions about their own health. She is passionate about delivering personalized patient care and is involved in all aspect of her patient’s care both before and after surgery.

Course Objective

This course will review the prevention, diagnosis and management of common medical emergencies in the dental office. The course content is applicable for the entire dental team. Emergencies can range from relatively benign conditions to life-threatening situations. Emergencies discussed in this course will include syncope, asthma attack, anaphylactic reaction, epileptic seizures, serotonin syndrome, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, angina/MI, hypoglycemia, severe hyperglycemia, thyroid storm, stroke, LA toxicity, and bleeding. Special attention will be placed on recognizing medical emergencies and their management. Additionally, this course will also shed light on what emergency equipment and medications are appropriate to stock for your dental office fo the management of medical emergencies.

 

New York AGD is designated as an Approved PACE Program Provider by the Academy of General Dentistry. The formal continuing education programs of this program provider are accepted by AGD for Fellowship, Mastership and membership maintenance credit. Approval does not imply acceptance by a state or provincial board of dentistry or AGD endorsement.  The current term of approval extends from 01/01/2019 to 12/31/2020.
