As scientific research trends show a predicted 54% increase of systemic diseases, particularly diabetes and heart disease, it is vital for dentists and dental practitioners to recognize their role to identify, treat and collaborate with appropriate medical professionals early on in order to reduce complications and manage their patient’s condition optimally.

Michelle Routhenstein is the owner and president of Entirely Nourished LLC, a Nutrition counseling and consulting private practice in New York City. She is a Preventive Cardiology Dietitian, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Educator. Michelle graduated with a Masters of Science Degree in Clinical Nutrition from NYU and completed her dietetic residency at NYU. She has over 10 years experience counseling patients on chronic disease prevention and management. Michelle, alongside a team of doctors and scientists, developed a risk assessment and prevention program for individuals who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease based on modifiable lifestyle medicine factors.
Course Goals and Objectives:
In this 2 hour lecture, dental practitioners will learn which systemic diseases can manifest in the oral cavity, how they present in such situations, and the appropriate plan of care.
- Identify 5 systemic diseases that can manifest in the oral cavity.
- State 3 possible causes for why uncontrolled chronic diseases can create a negative oral cavity.
- Explain why it is beneficial for the dental practitioner to identify systemic disease in their patients.
- List 2 things a dental practitioner should do once they suspect a systemic disease is present.
